Chiltern Hills

There are lots of Michelin Star restaurants within close proximity to Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, so a stay in or near to this gorgeous riverside town is a fantastic base for a foodie holiday in the UK. In particular, Bray in Berkshire, about a 20-minute drive away, is home to three fabulous places to enjoy superb meals.

The Waterside Inn is right beside the water and here, dedicated Chef Patron, Alain Roux, is at the helm of a team that creates gastronomic experiences with menus that favour creative, light and modern French cuisine. Meanwhile, at Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, the style promises a multi-sensory ‘journey full of curiosity and discovery’ with plenty of original dishes. Then, there’s Hinds Head, also Heston Blumenthal’s, that is a pub that serves British classics, usually with a twist.

Where to stay: Stay at Bix Cottage, a beautiful converted byre that sleeps 4, in the Oxfordshire countryside, a few miles from Henley-on-Thames. The property is within a 16-mile radius of 22 Michelin rated and starred restaurants and has a good selection of delis and farm shops within easy reach including the Nettlebed Creamery Cheese Shop. Need more space? Riverside View accommodates 10 guests and is only about a 16-minute drive from Bray.

Oxwich, Gower Peninsula

Next up in our Luxury UK Michelin Star Restaurant Guide is the Beach House that overlooks the Gower Peninsula’s stunning Oxwich Bay. Here, ingredients are sourced from the local area and menus are multi-course and inspired by the changing seasons.

You might find the likes of Roast Halibut Loin, Brown Butter Cauliflower, Lemon, Sauce of Caviar, Ketta and Katafi Crisp or Glazed Pigs Cheek, Creamed Onion, Compressed Apple, Black Pudding and Crispy Shallot Rings to choose from. Vegetarians are well catered for too, with separate complete menus available.

In addition, there is also a cosy bar where you can enjoy a pre-dinner drink or relax with a coffee afterwards, while a private dining room is available for special occasions.

Where to stay: Just a short walk from the restaurant are the luxurious three-bedroom Ty Alice  Ty Megan (pictured), Ty Florence and Ty Gwawr, and the two-bedroom Ty Seren. Each is beautifully styled with incredible attention to detail: think everything from cosy flame-effect fires, to handcrafted Welsh blankets on the beds.

Penton, Cumbria

The Michelin Star Pentonbridge Inn is a historic, 18th-century inn in Penton, Cumbria that’s surrounded by countryside and close to the Scottish Borders. It sells itself as a relaxed fine dining restaurant/gastro pub and serves seasonal modern British cuisine.

Herbs, fruits and vegetables are sourced from the walled garden of the owners’ Grade II* mansion house, Netherby Hall, just 3 miles away. Meanwhile, meat is sourced from Cumbria and fish and shellfish comes from Scotland. Everything is transformed into an 8-course tasting menu that perfectly showcases the best of the region’s suppliers. Highlights include tasty offerings such as Vadouvan Spiced North Sea Halibut and Cumbrian Texel Lamb.

Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire

Within easy reach of the Cotswolds, Salt is a Michelin Star Restaurant on Church Street in Stratford-upon-Avon. Ever since it was established in 2017 it has emphasised the use of the best produce for dishes served in a relaxed setting.

A selection of multi-course menus is available for lunch and dinner with optional drinks pairings for a total gourmet experience. To whet the appetite, think along the lines of Red Emmalie, Potato Mousse and Smoked Bone Marrow, or Aged Sirloin Tartare, Pickled Pear and Salt Baked Swede.

Where to stay: For an indulgent romantic break, The Stables (pictured) is a beautifully restored property, set within the grounds of a 6-acre country estate. It’s perfect for couples wishing to explore the local countryside and to relax. Plus, it is within about a 20-minute drive of Stratford-upon-Avon, so you can easily explore Shakespeare country, visit the theatre and enjoy a special dinner at Salt.

Ambleside, Lake District

Ambleside, one of the Lake District’s most popular destinations, easily makes it into our Luxury UK Michelin Star Restaurant Guide. Here, you’ll find The Old Stamp House Restaurant. The building was once the office of William Wordsworth, during his role as Westmorland Distributor of Stamps. Today, the restaurant offers an intimate space and innovative menus that highlight Cumbrian produce with influences from the county’s seafaring connection with the Americas and India.

There is more Michelin Star dining in Ambleside, at The Samling. Here, the bold flavours of the seasonal dishes are set off against the serene lakeside views. As many ingredients as possible are sourced from the restaurant’s greenhouse, gardens and woodland.

Where to stay: Beatrix Cottage (pictured) is a traditional stone cottage in an enviable location within easy driving distance of Ambleside. It sleeps up to 4 guests, is beautifully decorated, comes with a hot tub and there’s a pub within walking distance.

Padstow, Cornwall

Just a minute’s walk from the delightful fishing harbour of Padstow in Cornwall, is Paul Ainsworth at No.6. Housed inside a Georgian townhouse and with a stylish vibe, it’s a fantastic place to treat yourselves. On the first floor there’s Ci Ci’s Bar that has the style of an exclusive club and is perfect for aperitifs, cocktails and digestifs to make an evening of it.

Meanwhile, the restaurant is an intimate and cosy space where diners can see the chefs at work from their table. There is also a private dining room for hire for up to six people. Cuisine is modern British, and the cooking style is creative, original and puts a contemporary spin on traditional recipes. With an emphasis on local Cornish produce, you might find the likes of Kelp-cured Cornish Cod on the menu.

Where to stay: Padstone Farmhouse (pictured) sleeps up to eight guests and is fantastic for a reunion with friends or family. With an elegant and sociable layout, plus an idyllic countryside location, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing escape in Cornwall.

Menai Bridge, Anglesey

Located on High Street in Menai Bridge on Anglesey is Sosban & The Old Butchers. Found inside an historic butchers shop, but now a place of calm with an intimate atmosphere, this Michelin Star Restaurant promises something different. Menus are kept under wraps but involve tasting a series of dishes that are cleverly put together using locally sourced ingredients.

With just four tables and open for dinner on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays only, this place is often booked up well in advance. However, this adds to the feeling of anticipation and exclusivity. Welsh slate walls and locally sourced crockery give a sense of place and evenings are designed to feel like a private event, rather than ‘just dinner’.

Where to stay: Seaview (pictured) is just several minutes’ drive away and makes an excellent place to stay for your culinary journey. This two-bedroom luxury apartment sleeps 4 guests, enjoys breathtaking vistas of the Menai Strait and is well located for walks on the coastal path. However, as Anglesey is quite easy to navigate your way around, many of our Anglesey holiday cottages make a great base.

If you’re planning a luxury cottage holiday in the Cotswolds, there are plenty of fantastic restaurants, farm shops and quaint pubs for foodies to discover. For Michelin Star dining however, head to Le Champignon Sauvage in the historic spa town of Cheltenham.

Décor is a blend of modern artwork with large tables where you can relax as you enjoy the attentive but unobtrusive service at this restaurant that was established in 1987. Dishes have a modern French flair, while ingredients, which are anything from the humblest to the most expensive, are expertly crafted into exciting flavours.

Where to stay: The restaurant is about a 20-minute drive away from Withington Grange (pictured) that sleeps up to 12 guests in six bedrooms and comes with a heated swimming pool and tennis court.
