The Best Places to Visit in Scotland

Our Scottish holiday cottages are located in and within reach of some of the best places to visit in Scotland.

If you are looking for a short break idea, or are a first-time visitor to Scotland, the Scottish Borders offer a little bit of everything that makes Scotland so special. Work up an appetite with a walk in the hills or beside glistening rivers, visit stately homes and shop in bustling, local towns.

If a city break tempts you, there is always something to see and do in Edinburgh. The city is perfect for a shopping fix, while the art galleries, theatres and an eclectic festival scene will help quench your thirst for culture.

If you seek quintessential Scottish scenery, think sparkling lochs, lush glens, pine forests and snow-capped mountains, you will be spoilt for choice. Scotland is blessed with more than its fair share of stunning locations including the Highlands and two stunning National Parks, the Cairngorms National Park and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.

All offer the opportunity to enjoy a degree of remoteness and are perfect if you thrive on outdoor adventures such as hiking, mountain-biking and water sports. If you are desperate to spot a red squirrel or a wild deer or two, these areas are rich in wildlife so can reap rewards if you are patient and go looking in the right places.

The Best Times to Visit Scotland

Scotland’s seasons are well defined, So, if you want to see snow in winter, there is a good chance of that. Meanwhile, Scottish summers can be cooler than other places in the UK, so are a good option for those who don’t like their temperatures too hot – especially good for adventure activities that are likely to work up a sweat.

If you love a good celebration steeped in tradition, Burns Night held on 25th January is a fantastic time to immerse yourself in Scottish culture. Sample typical Scottish cuisine and enjoy a wee dram of whisky as you pay homage to Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns.

In springtime, fantastic floral displays come into bloom with plenty of snowdrop and daffodil walks on offer. Scotland’s castles and historic homes reopen for visits and tours too, perfect for history lovers to see the past brought to life.

If it is culture that you crave, time your visit for one of Scotland’s many festivals. There is a diverse range to choose from. The Edinburgh Fringe, held in August, is the ideal place to watch up and coming comedians and musicians refine their acts. However, for a true taste of Scottish culture, visiting the Highland Games is a must. Held in Highland towns across the summer months, this event promises lots of fun and drama for spectators.

In autumn, the Cairngorms National Park is a true delight for walkers, photographers and wildlife lovers. As the leaves turn from green to red and morning mists appear across the moorlands the views are mesmerising. You might even be lucky enough to witness the fascinating spectacle of stags fighting during rutting season.

The Best Things to do in Scotland

When you think about your Scotland holiday, you will want to base yourself in the optimum place to see, do and experience all the things that make you and your fellow travellers tick. At least one cottage holiday in Scotland in a lifetime should include a trip to Loch Ness in search of the mythical beast, Nessie. Keep your eyes peeled, you never know.

Scotland is known for its lochs and we recommend treating yourself to a spectacular mini road trip, the Three Lochs Forest Drive in The Trossachs, that will reward you with a snapshot of stunning Highlands scenery. Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park is also a fantastic place for a fishing holiday in Scotland.

There are over 1,500 castles, from spectacular feats of engineering to homes that look like they are plucked straight out of a child’s imagination, in Scotland. No break to a Scottish holiday cottage would be complete without incorporating one or two onto your list of things to do. From the atmospheric ruins of Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness, to the mighty Edinburgh Castle in the heart of the bustling capital city, each is unique.

If you like whisky, as you may have guessed, there are endless opportunities to sample this popular Scottish tipple. Visit the whisky shops to discover the local blend. Or head to one of the distilleries for an interactive experience with tours and tasting experiences on offer.

Whether you are looking for a quiet romantic getaway in Scotland with beautiful scenery all around, a hot tub and the opportunity to stargaze in clear night skies, or a Scottish holiday full of activities and adventure, we can help.

Cottages With Hot Tubs in Scotland

A luxury cottage with a hot tub in Scotland is a fantastic choice if you’re looking for the ultimate way to relax after days out exploring. Whether you are planning to sightsee, shop and eat in one of the bustling cities, or you want to enjoy the active pursuits such as hiking, cycling and water sports that Scotland is known for, a hot tub is the best way to unwind at the end of the day.

Pour a glass of chilled Champagne and toast your holiday. Then, allow the soothing waters to help you unwind as you reminisce about your day and make plans for tomorrow.
