Sustainable Travel

Our commitment to sustainable travel and the environment

Sustainable travel is a key focus for the team at Luxury Cottages and a major consideration for many of our property owners and guests. As a result, we work hard to minimise the carbon footprint of our properties and guest travel. Below are a series of initiatives we are spearheading to improve the sustainability of our business.

Eco-friendly Toiletries

Single-use plastics are one of the largest threats to our environment with eight million metric tonnes of plastic ending up in our oceans each year. Toiletries are a major contributor to plastic pollution with 200m miniature bottles of shampoo and conditioner dumped in landfill in the UK each year. As a result, we ask all our owners to be more conscious of the impact of plastics on the environment and use recommended suppliers to reduce their consumption of them.

For toiletries, we recommend ANYAH, a range of certified cosmetics with a focus on sustainability. They contain no aggressive preservatives and the packaging is made from recycled materials. The cosmetic products are made from plant extracts such as shea butter, macadamia butter and jojoba oil. They are also paraben-free, BHT-free, mineral oil-free, nickel tested, formaldehyde-free, vegan-friendly and silicone free.

Beds and Mattresses

We’re proud to partner with Hypnos who are at the forefront of sustainability in bed-making. Not only are they a carbon neutral company but they also use naturally and ethically sourced materials. You won’t find any foam or unsustainable fabrics in any of their products.

Hypnos use the finest quality British Wool certified by Red Tractor. The company has a proud tradition of sustainability being certified carbon neutral since 2011 and offsetting more than 5,905 tonnes of CO2 and planting over 600 trees in the meantime.

The wood used in all divan bases is either FSC or PEFC certified timber from forests managed in a responsible manner. All beds are 100% recyclable and Hypnos have developed a disposal and recycling service for old beds and mattresses.

Carbon Neutrality

Cars account for up to 20% of global carbon emissions and on average account for 20-30% of a typical household’s footprint and significant proportion of the carbon footprint of most businesses. We’re mindful of the impact of this on the environment so work with a number of initiatives in order to minimise the carbon footprint of our business.

We’re committed to being a positive force for change and offset the carbon footprint of all our employees through Ecologi. This allows us to operate a climate positive workforce, supporting clean energy projects across the globe and planting trees to offset carbon emissions.

Offsetting Guest Travel

Taking a long haul flight generates more carbon emissions than the average person produces in an entire year and whilst domestic travel is far more eco-friendly, it still has an impact on the environment.

In order to help reduce the impact of their travel, we offer our guests the opportunity to offset the carbon emissions from their journey through Consensus. Our commitment to carbon neutrality means guests can now make donations to carbon offset projects in order to minimise their carbon footprint.
