Kielder National Park

The Best Places to Visit in Northumberland

For glorious, sandy beaches, the Northumberland coastline, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is incredible. Most beaches here are wide with plenty of space to spread out and have fun.

Amongst them are Beadnell, located on a beautiful, sheltered bay, as well as Seahouses which is the gateway to the Farne Islands. A sanctuary for an array of seabirds, the islands are an excellent place for wildlife-spotting.

One of the best places for an outdoor adventure is the Northumberland National Park. The pretty countryside is perfect for hikers, cyclists and horse-riders, while stargazers can enjoy the dark skies. Meanwhile, the Kielder Water and Forest Park is fantastic for water-based activities.

If you’re into history, there’s rich Roman heritage including Hadrian’s Wall and incredible castles like Bamburgh Castle and Alnwick Castle to head to.

Holy Island Of Lindisfarne, Northumberland

The Best Things to Do in Northumberland

If you like to feel the sand between your toes, there are lots of beaches to choose from, including Bamburgh. Families should head to the rock pools to see what sea creatures are lurking, while walkers will love the coastal scenery.

If you like wildlife, the sand dune system along the coast is an important wildlife habitat. Meanwhile, there are red squirrels to be seen in Kielder Forest and the Farne Islands are a national nature reserve, home to seals and puffins.

However, if it’s historical sites that you’re looking for, there are many. Visit Housesteads Roman Fort along Hadrian’s Wall where it is thought that around 800 soldiers were stationed. Or, pay a visit to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne which is steeped in history, such as Lindisfarne Priory, and is a stunning place to spend a few hours.
