The Best Places to Visit in the Cotswolds

A luxury cottage in the Cotswolds is superb for enjoying the countryside, whether on a long walk or relaxing in the beer garden of an historic inn with a glass of local ale. As an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you can be sure of pretty scenery from rolling hills to charming villages with winding cobbled streets.

When it comes to exploring, the village of Bourton-on-the-Water, where the River Windrush and the low-level bridges that cross over it are the focal point, and the small town of Stow-on-the-Wold, popular with antique hunters, are some of the loveliest places to visit.

The Cotswolds region is blessed with many stately homes, fine gardens and historic points of interest such as Broadway Tower and the village of Bibury which is home to the National Trust’s picturesque Arlington Row.

Meanwhile, larger towns in the area include Cheltenham which offers an array of shopping and entertainment opportunities including the Cheltenham Festival races.

The Best Times to Visit the Cotswolds

If you like to seek out things that are quirky, the Cotswolds is full of them, from the ancient tradition of wassailing in January to the famous cheese rolling competition held in May.

In late winter, there are beautiful displays of snowdrops throughout the Cotswolds that are sure to provide a beautiful setting for a Valentine’s break in February. If it is floral splendour and fine gardens that make you happy, Highgrove opens its gardens in April and special tours, including a tour that concludes with an indulgent champagne tea, can be booked.

In the summer, there are lots of festivals and shows on offer, from Battle Proms at to Feastival that combines music and the love of food, with fantastic entertainment. Meanwhile, October is the month for book lovers, as Cheltenham holds its Literature Festival and a host of events are held across the town.

Once the nights draw in, the Cotswolds offer everything from illuminated trails in spectacular settings to Christmas markets. One particular highlight of the festive season is the Christmas tree that stands in the shallows of the River Windrush in Bourton-on-the-Water. It’s a beautiful sight.
