Bowness-on-Windermere

Bowness-on-Windermere

Bowness-on-Windermere is the largest tourist hub in the Lake District, known for its links to Beatrix Potter and surrounding fells which guidebook author Alfred Wainwright quite literally put on the map.

Visitors come from far and wide to enjoy country walks, water sports and soaking up the scenery. The town itself is brimming with shops, museums and eateries – and many welcome dogs.

Whether it’s a romantic retreat, big family holiday or a getaway with friends, step inside one of our handpicked cottages and find a home away from home (with a little extra luxury, you are on holiday after all).

The Tern Passenger Steamer Setting Off From Lakeside For Its Sailing On Lake Windermere

The Best Things to Do in Bowness-on-Windermere

Expect to see Beatrix Potter’s footprints everywhere in Bowness and the surrounding area. When she died in 1943, she left 14 farms and 4,000 acres of land to the National Trust, including Hill Top Farm which inspired many of her books. A visit to the World of Beatrix Potter is something all generations will enjoy. See the beloved author’s 23 tales come to life in the museum and gardens before enjoying a cream tea at the cafe.

Outdoorsy types have a wide range of water sports on offer on Windermere Lake, including canoeing, kayaking and sailing trips from Bowness Pier. And from gentle rambles to uphill clambers, there are walking routes to suit all abilities in the area, each promising epic views of the Lake District.

Beyond Bowness, Windermere and Kendal are reachable on foot and Keswick is 45 minutes away by car.
