Middle Lodge is one of nine beautifully renovated apartments and cottages set within the 36-acre private estate of a Grade II*-listed mansion house in north Cumbria. The gatehouse enjoys a secluded spot at the entrance of the estate and is a striking, double-fronted cottage that exquisitely combines original architectural details with contemporary living. It’s perfect for a family or couples alike and highlights include a private garden, a master bedroom with a rolltop bath in the room and living areas with two log burners. Meanwhile, the estate grounds are perfect for a quiet stroll and the local Michelin starred restaurant, Pentonbridge Inn is sure to impress with its popular tasting menu.

This two-bedroom cottage is surrounded by woodland and retains original features including wooden ceiling beams. However, the style is modern and there are home comforts and luxuries throughout.

On the ground floor, the traditional layout, with separate lounge and dining room, offers the flexibility to socialise together or enjoy space alone every now and then too. The dining room has a table and chairs, while the lounge features sofa seating and a 40-inch Smart TV. Both rooms have a wood-burning stove. There’s a separate kitchen with utility area at the back of the house that’s equipped with an electric oven and induction hob, a microwave, fridge/freezer, kettle, coffee machine, dishwasher and washer/dryer.

Off the utility there is a cloakroom with WC and sink. Upstairs, there are two well-proportioned bedrooms. The master has a king-size bed and a freestanding rolltop bath in the room to add that extra touch of indulgence. The second bedroom has two zip and link single beds (which can be formed into a king-size bed if required). There is also a shower room with WC and sink.

The cottage is the only one at the estate that benefits from a private, enclosed garden. It has a large lawned area that’s ideal for letting kids and dogs run round if you have them in tow. With a dining table and chairs, as well as a BBQ, it’s a fantastic place for lazy days outside, eating alfresco and enjoying evening drinks. Relax in our wood-fuelled hot tub located on the private patio. Enjoy your place of peace with this stunning tub, built with relaxation in mind. Scandinavian thermowood meets an interior shaped for comfort, creating a luxury centrepiece you’ll never want to leave. We can even have it warmed and ready for your arrival.

You’ll also have access to the estate’s 36 acres of grounds that include parkland and a walled garden. Meanwhile, benches are positioned in scenic spots so that you can enjoy reading a good book, chatting or daydreaming in peace.

A member of staff will greet you on arrival and show you into the property. The cottage is located next to the entrance of the estate, about a 4-minute walk from the main house. Alternatively, a self-check can be arranged if required. The estate grounds and walled garden are available to guests of all the apartments and cottages at the site.

The estate’s kitchen garden supplies fruit, vegetables and micro herbs to the nearby fine dining pub. Biomass heating is used across all the properties and in the glasshouses, while other crops that require warmth, such as tomatoes, aubergines and peppers, are grown in season. If you'd like to offset the carbon emissions from your trip, get in touch and we can arrange this for a small fee.

Deposit: Bookings are subject to a non-refundable deposit of 30% of the booking value plus applicable booking fees with the balance payable 60 days before the date of travel.

Accidental Damage Deposit: To maintain the highest standards in our properties, guests will need to pay a refundable Accidental Damage Deposit of £200 prior to their stay. An advance payment as detailed in the booking summary can be made to waive this requirement.

The property enjoys a peaceful location in the Cumbrian countryside, near the border with Scotland. You are welcome to explore the grounds of the estate that span 36 acres. Parkland with extensive lawns, a Victorian pleasure garden, a large walled garden that measures just over an acre, herbaceous borders and wildflower meadows all await you.

Views from the grounds are spectacular and it’s possible to see as far as the Scottish hills. The mansion’s grounds also play host to a number of events throughout the year, including classic car shows.

Longtown is the nearest town and is a small market town where you’ll find the nearest convenience store (about 2 miles from the property). The town is also a great starting point for walks along the River Esk and into the countryside.

Meanwhile, Kershope Forest is a few miles away for woodland walks and a bit further again is Kielder Water where you can walk through the forest or around the reservoir.

When it comes to dining out, there’s a superb fine dining pub 3 miles away from the property that offers an 8-course tasting menu. Ingredients are sourced locally, including from the kitchen garden at the estate. *For every meal booked a complimentary transfer is included, so you don’t have to worry about the driving. The pub is open Wednesdays to Saturdays, with a seasonal closure late December/early January. For details, please enquire before booking.

The city of Carlisle is about 12 miles away and offers plenty of shopping opportunities, places to eat and entertainment venues including The Sands centre that hosts a variety of shows, concerts and events.

There’s plenty of culture and history to soak up too. Visit Carlisle Castle, the cathedral and the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall runs close to Carlisle, so if you’re up for discovering a section of this coast-to-coast path (that stretches for 84 miles in total) then don’t forget to pack your walking boots.

Meanwhile, the Northern Fells of the Lake District are about 25 miles away where you can climb mountains such as Skiddaw. Or visit the Caldbeck Fells and you’ll be rewarded with stunning views over the Solway estuary.

Getting around

A car is recommended for travelling to the property and ease of getting around. There is parking for four cars at the front of the cottage. However, the nearest train station is Carlisle, about a 20-minute drive away.
