The neighbourhood
Appleby is 3 miles from the property and is a traditional market town. It has a thriving market and all the amenities you might need throughout your stay. There are numerous places to eat and many independent shops. If you’re feeling more active, there’s a golf course, while the swimming pool at the sports centre is a great way to spend a rainy day.
Appleby Castle is one of the many castles in the area and is part of The Lady Anne Way walk. In its entirety the walk spans 100 miles from Skipton to Brougham Castle and incorporates many wonderful castles.
For families, Lowther Castle has a visitors’ centre and outdoor play area which is very popular with young children, as too is Abbotts Lodge Ice Cream Parlour!
If you are looking to rest and unwind, Appleby Manor and Spa is a well-known retreat providing a space to enjoy some down time, spa treatments and fine dining.
If you wish to explore further afield Kirkby Stephen and Penrith are worth a visit.
The
Lake District is about a 45-minute drive from the cottage, with Ullswater being the nearest lake. A variety of activities await in the
Lake District including paddle and wake boarding, canoeing and sightseeing boat trips aboard a steamer.
Throughout the summer there are many agricultural shows in the area that offer a glimpse into local life. Appleby and Penrith shows are very popular and are a fantastic way to see a variety of farm animals, as well as pick up locally made produce including cheeses and beers.
If music is more your thing, Kendal Calling has become an annual music festival and a date for your diary.
Getting around
A car is essential for travelling to the property and ease of getting around. There is private parking for up to six cars, plus there’s an electric vehicle charger at the site. If you are bringing bikes or plan to rent them during your stay, the cottage has bike storage.
