The neighbourhood
The cottage has a fantastic location in the centre of the Cumbrian market town of Penrith. When you fancy eating out or sampling the local nightlife, a variety of restaurants, pubs and bars are within easy walking distance, some just a minute or two away. There's also a cinema.
Penrith has a good mix of independent shops, high street brands and specialist shops, perfect for retail therapy. For arts and culture head to the Rheged Centre that offers a diverse programme of exhibitions, live streaming and film with a mix of shopping, craft classes and dining experiences. The historic Penrith Castle is located a short 10 minute walk away.
Penrith is an excellent base for enjoying the great outdoors and you can begin with a walking tour of the town. However, there are plenty more walking routes nearby: The Beacon, Lowther Castle, Brougham Castle and Thacka Beck Nature Reserve to name a few. Many cycling routes also start from Penrith, while nearby Lowther Castle is a very popular place to explore by bike and bikes can be hired on site.
Lowther Castle & Gardens can be reached by car in about 15 minutes and is an intriguing place to visit that’s steeped in history and offers woodland walks, dramatic ruins and ancient gardens.
The Lake District is easily accessible and Ullswater is about a 10 to 15-minute drive away from the cottage. Head for the pretty village of Pooley Bridge (also accessible by bus) where you can catch the Ullswater 'steamer' for a scenic cruise. There’s also the opportunity to hit the water with an array of water sports including paddle boarding and wake surfing.
Meanwhile, the Lake District town of Keswick, next to Derwentwater, is only 25 minutes by car and is also accessible by bus. It’s the ideal day trip with beautiful views, cafes, pubs, rowing boats and walking routes to discover.
The Lake District is perfect for hiking and Helton Fell, Askham Fell, Blencathra, Catbells and Hallin Fell are all popular trails.
Getting around
The cottage is situated on an access only, one-way street and unfortunately does not offer any parking. However, you can unload your luggage at the front door, prior to parking. Free parking is available in nearby streets between 6pm and 8am and at any other time for 1 hour (disc zone). Alternatively, there are many long stay carparks close by.
Penrith train station is about a 5 to 10-minute walk from the cottage and taxis are available outside.
There are local buses to help you get around too, while bikes are available to hire in the town centre and the cottage has space to store bikes.
