The Best Things to Do in Ashbourne

Ashbourne’s lively little market town is brimming with historic buildings. Inside them are independent shops, tearooms and eateries. If you only do one thing when in town, try some Ashbourne Gingerbread. The recipe dates back to the Napoleonic Wars when it was stolen from French captives held in Ashbourne. You can find the original Ashbourne Gingerbread Shop on St John’s Street.

Feel the adrenaline rush at Alton Towers within a 20-minute drive from Ashbourne or drive another 20 minutes and you’ll reach Bakewell, famous for… you guessed it – the Bakewell Tart. Chatsworth House is also nearby.

Need to walk off all of those sweet treats? There’s a whole host of outdoor adventures in Ashbourne’s back garden. Ashbourne has been dubbed the ‘gateway to Dovedale,’ known for its stepping stones over the River Dove. The Tissington Trail is also on your doorstep – a 13-mile traffic-free route for walking and cycling.
