Loch Lomond and the surrounding mountains are superb for embracing the peace of the great outdoors. Go walking and discover your own slice of unspoilt wilderness, with just the sounds of nature for company. Bliss!
Choose an uphill route for the most breath-taking views across the loch and the forested hillsides, but don’t forget your camera. The area is also a haven for wildlife, so fingers crossed you might spot deer, an eagle or even a pine marten.
If you prefer, explore by mountain bike or on a leisurely pony trek, whilst attractions conducive to enjoying the scenery include the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre.
A place of lush Welsh hills and valleys, Montgomeryshire is an excellent destination for a quiet holiday in the UK. At its heart is the small, but very pretty town of Montgomery where a short walk uphill will bring you to Montgomery Castle. From here, the views of the countryside are incredible.
Fill your days with peaceful activities including walking along the Offa’s Dyke trail or visiting the spectacular Powis Castle, renowned for its stunning gardens.
Meanwhile, the award-winning Kerry Vale Vineyard, set in the picturesque Kerry Vale, offers afternoon tea and tours, including private wine-tasting sessions.
The natural beauty and tranquillity of the Lake District, that inspired creative brains including William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, will always be magical for visitors.
While many towns get busy, there are still lots of places to find some quiet. Try Wastwater, accessed along a single-track road, which is particularly good for relishing that truly remote feeling.
However, there are plenty of low-key activities to enjoy across the entire Lake District. Hire a motorboat and find a spot to drift for a little while or savour a picnic on a secluded stretch of shoreline. Or, follow one of the lesser-known fell walking trails and perhaps seek out a safe spot for an invigorating wild swim.
We can’t mention Snowdonia without mentioning Mount Snowdon. Yes, it’s one of the busiest tourist attractions, but if you’re a first-time visitor it’s simply a must. We suggest taking the leisurely train journey to the summit where, if the weather is kind, you’ll be rewarded with calming, far-reaching views.
If you’ve already ‘conquered’ Snowdon, head to the quieter peaks of the Aran and Arenig ranges near the town of Bala where you might not even pass another sole.
If you can’t get enough of the scenery, visit Swallow Falls waterfall, take a bike ride in the Beddgelert Forest or tootle around Llyn Padarn on the Llanberis Lake Railway.
The Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty includes some of the finest English countryside there is. With parts of the region just a 40-minute train ride from London, it’s also very accessible and ideal for a last-minute, quiet holiday.
It covers parts of Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, and is fantastic for walking, cycling and nature-lovers. It won’t be long before you settle into the delightful, slow pace.
We recommend visiting the sleepy villages in the idyllic Hambleden Valley for gentle strolls and quintessential country pubs. Or for walking and birdwatching, head to Coombe Hill, which is especially beautiful in the summer when the wildflowers are in full bloom.
