The neighbourhood
The cottage is situated in the small village of Nether Compton, almost on the border of
Dorset and
Somerset, so it’s an ideal base for exploring the two counties.
About a 10-minute drive away is the pretty town of Sherbourne with its historic Sherbourne Abbey and two castles, one being a stately home and the other an impressive 12th century ruin. It’s a great place to dine and shop in independent stores, plus there are regular farmers’, artisan and vintage markets.
If you want to get out and explore the countryside and the coast, there are plenty of ways to do so locally. For walking there’s The Monarch’s Way and McMillan Way, while the National Cycle Route 26 is also nearby. Or head out to explore the Jurassic Coast along the South West coastal path. The nearest beach is in Weymouth, only around 30 minutes’ drive away from the house.
Meanwhile, other attractions that make a great day trip include Minterne House and Gardens that feature beautiful gardens in the style of Capability Brown, while the lovely village of Cerne Abbas is worth a visit to see the giant chalk figure carved into the hills. There are also National Trust properties, including Montacute House, Lytes Cary Manor and Stourhead House and Gardens, to visit.
If it’s museums that you enjoy, head to Fleet Air Arm Museum that showcases the aviation history of the Royal Navy, or Haynes Motor Museum with its impressive collection of around 400 vehicles.
