Blackdown Cottage is a semi-detached, stone cottage that’s full of character with exposed stone walls and oak beams in the living area, and a charming courtyard garden. Located at the edge of the pretty village of Membury in East Devon’s Black Down Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and set in the 8-acre estate of the owners’ Georgian country house, the cottage offers a remote, countryside stay. Yet, the Jurassic Coast, popular seaside resorts and a network of walking trails are all within reach.

Blackdown Cottage is a double-storey holiday property, with a slightly quirky layout, that has been kitted out in a homely country style to offer families or friends a comfortable place to stay in the Black Down Hills. Dark wooden furniture is complemented by light wood floors and white walls, whilst decorative rugs and bedspreads are in keeping with the cosy cottage theme.
On the ground floor is the sitting room with two sofas and plenty of space to spread out and watch TV or read a book by the cosy fireplace. You’ll also notice a picture of a Britannia aircraft has been proudly hung on the wall. It’s a nod to the White family who bought the estate in 1919 and were instrumental in the manufacture of early, pioneering aircraft.
Upstairs, on the first floor, is the kitchen and dining area which has a table to seat four. There’s everything you will need to make a tasty meal, as well as a dishwasher to make light work of clearing up.
Also upstairs are the two bedrooms; one of which has a double bed and an en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower over. The other bedroom has two single beds (which can be converted into a double on request) and has an en suite shower room. It’s so peaceful here that many guests claim to have had one of their best night’s sleep ever.
The cottage’s courtyard garden is accessed via the French doors off the dining area. Here you will find a table and chairs where you can enjoy an alfresco breakfast or perhaps a mug of hot chocolate as you spend an evening stargazing. Beyond this is a lawned area where children or dogs can enjoy a little walk.
Blackdown Cottage is one of five cottages set on the owners’ 8-acre estate and on arrival, the owners who live in the Georgian country house on the estate, will be available to meet you.
Guests are welcome to enjoy walks in the estate’s grounds that include a garden with mature trees and a large pond, as well as a wooded area and fields. It’s a totally peaceful place and as such guests are asked to respect the air of tranquillity.
The estate in which Blackdown Cottage is located is a haven for wildlife including deer and a range of birds. The owners are keen to help nature flourish by, for example, maintaining the natural pond and ensuring there are bee-friendly plants.
