From the Yorkshire Dales to the North Yorkshire coast, there are lots of summer events in Yorkshire to look forward to. Witness traditions like straw bale racing that have to be seen to be believed, immerse yourself in local life at an agricultural show or buy tickets for a concert at the Harrogate International Music Festival. Classical Music Outdoors

Harrogate International Music Festival

29th June to 16th July 2023

One of the best summer events in Yorkshire for music lovers is Harrogate International Music Festival. The annual event showcases a range of genres; however it grew from classical and chamber music that is very much still at the heart of the festival.

There are three long weekends of classical, chamber and jazz music to look forward to with events taking place at a variety of venues across the town. From candlelit concerts to touring theatre performances at RHS Harlow Carr, from the Young Musicians series to listening to a brass band, from musicians plying in pubs to a silent disco, there is something to suit all tastes and ages.

Middleham Castle Richard III Festival

1st to 2nd July 2023

A visit to Middleham Castle, the childhood home of Richard III, is both interesting and fun. However, during the Richard III Festival it really comes to life. Actors from a living history group take over the grounds of the castle, so you can travel back in time to the 15th century.

You can walk amongst a medieval village, smell the cooking of the day and take part in willow weaving and candle making demonstrations. Don’t leave without heading up to the viewing platform for incredible views across Wensleydale.

If you’re looking for a place to stay that’s very close by, The Reading House (sleeps 6) is located in the village of Carlton that neighbours Middleham and is a great base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales.

Oxenhope Straw Race

2nd July 2023

If you’re interested in seeking out unusual events in Yorkshire, head to the village of Oxenhope, near Keighley, for the annual Oxenhope Straw Race. It’s one of the quirkiest summer events in Yorkshire that all started when two men had a bet about who could win a race from one pub to the next whilst carrying a bale of hay.

The tale is now so legendary locally that it attracts visitors who come to take part and those who want to join in the fun. It’s all in aid of raising money and participants usually turn out in fancy dress, while the village pubs become very popular!.

Want to be at the heart of the action? The Lee (sleeps 4) is located in the picturesque countryside, near to the village of Oxenhope. It also features a lovely hot tub and countryside views to savour.

Great Yorkshire Show

11th to 14th July 2023

For a real taste of rural Yorkshire life, visit the Great Yorkshire Show that is renowned as one of the best agricultural shows in the UK. It takes place at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Celebrating agriculture, local food, farming and all things to do with the countryside, you can expect to see plenty of traditions, plus some new additions.

From show-jumping to sheepdog trials, beekeeping to forestry and a host of prizes for best livestock across a variety of categories, there is plenty to see. Meanwhile, there are family-friendly crafts to get stuck into, while the fantastic food hall and cookery demonstrations are sure to whet the appetite.

Steam Train Moving Through The Countryside In The UK

22nd July to 20th August 2023

During several weekends throughout July and August (22nd & 23rd and 29th & 30th July, and 5th & 6th, 12th & 13th and 19th & 20th August), the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway is operating a selection of historic coaches from its museum collection. Many of these date to the Victorian era and aren’t usually available for public use.

These beautifully restored coaches will escort you along a 5-mile heritage route between the industrial heart of Keighley and the pretty Bronte Country of Oxenhope. Perfect for vintage train enthusiasts or anyone who simply loves train travel and delightful scenery.

Why not stay at The Lee in Haworth, which is very close to Worth Valley, Bilberry Bank Cottage near Holmfirth or Meadow Barn in Rishworth? These properties are stylish abodes and surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Whitby Regatta is a fantastic summer event in Yorkshire this August. An annual extravaganza, this historic regatta offers the opportunity to watch yacht and rowing races on the sea, for a weekend of excitement and drama.

Alongside the racing, there are plenty of free activities and fun entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. From air displays and classic car rallies to a sparkling finale of fireworks to close the event, the weekend is packed full of interesting things to see and do.

25th to 28th August

For something quite breathtaking, the Yorkshire Balloon Fiesta is sure to delight visitors of all ages. This 4-day hot air balloon festival, held at Castle Howard in York is a spectacle of colourful, hot air balloons.

There is the opportunity to see mass balloon launches and meet the pilots, plus live music from well-known names and children’s entertainment including crafts, cookie decorating and fun fair rides.

Wensleydale Show

26th August

Glimpse how things are truly done in the Yorkshire Dales countryside at the Wensleydale Show. This popular agricultural show is a favourite summer event in Yorkshire and takes place in the heart of beautiful Wensleydale.

Featuring a mix of livestock, horticulture and craft events, the show is both interesting and educational. There’s plenty to see including stone-wall displays, horse shows and vintage steam car collections. You can also meet adorable Wensleydale sheep, plus there’s an array of stalls to sample and purchase everything from local produce to country attire.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, The Old Chapel is a beautiful chapel conversion in the typical Dales village of Carlton and is surrounded by beautiful countryside.
