The neighbourhood
The house is located in the small Devon fishing village of Beesands in the South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Beesands has a mile-long, Blue Flag, shingle beach, a village green, a beach shop and café, a fishing tackle shop and an award-winning gastro pub. So, if it’s lazy days that you’re after, you don’t need to venture far. If you like birdwatching, the village also has a freshwater lake, known as Widdecombe Ley, that attracts a variety of species.
From the village you can walk the National Trust’s South West Coast Path for beautiful scenery, fresh air and exercise. If you have a dog with you, we recommend walking to the small village of Hallsands, about 3 miles away, which has a great dog-friendly beach.
If you’re after a good walk with a good lunch at the end of it, head along the coastal path to the village of Torcross which takes about an hour. There are several cafes and restaurants to choose from, as well as local shops to peruse. If you prefer to drive, it’s about 10 minutes away.
The South Hams Peninsula brims with unspoilt beauty, which incorporates the Avon and Dart Valleys, stunning coastline and lovely villages, towns and beaches. Visit the bustling market town of Kingsbridge (about 8 miles away) where you can shop at an array of independent retailers. Meanwhile, the pretty fishing port of Dartmouth (12 miles) is great for cliff-side trails, picnic spots and boat trips along the River Dart, as well as a good selection of shops including supermarkets.
During the summer months, enjoy a scenic ferry trip along the estuary between Kingsbridge and Salcombe. There are waterfront homes, yachts and a variety of birdlife to spot along the way.
The picturesque beaches of Blackpool Sands and Slapton Beach, as well as historic Torcross used for practicing the Normandy landings, are also highlights of the South Hams.
