The neighbourhood
Twitchers Cottage is set in a quiet corner of the
Lake District, on a small, luxury cottage complex with an on-site gym and a spa area with Jacuzzi, sauna and a heated 16-metre swimming pool. The pool and spa facilities are made available to one cottage at a time, so that you can experience having them all to yourself for the ultimate pampering treat (you will be asked to pre-book time slots). For an extra cost, spa treatments including aromatherapy and sports massages can be booked.
There are also three acres of gardens and an arboretum for nature-lovers to explore. Birdwatchers in particular will enjoy looking for the many garden species, as well as trying to spot woodpeckers and owls. The pond attracts frogs, newts and ducks, while bats are frequently seen, and on occasion so are wild deer.
Within a 15-minute drive of the cottage are the popular towns of Kendal and Windermere, so supermarkets for stocking up aren’t far, but there is a local shop within 5 minutes’ drive for those urgent essentials. When you’d prefer to eat out, there are a variety of pubs and restaurants within driving distance. However, if you want to work up more of an appetite first, walk to the pretty village of Staveley, which takes just under an hour, for a choice of dining at the pub or the Hawkshead Brewery, or enjoying a cake or pie from the coffee shop or the artisan bakery.
You can also take advantage of the private dining service (extra cost) where a local chef will prepare a delicious, multi-course dinner in your cottage for you to enjoy without having to lift a finger.
Whilst there are plenty of walks to soak up the scenery directly from the cottage door, if you fancy a day out in the car there are many attractions in the region, including the Lakeland Motor Museum, the Lakes Aquarium and pleasure boat cruises on Lake Windermere.
Getting around
Due to the semi-remote, rural location, we recommend arriving at Twitchers Cottage by car and the M6 is only a 15-minute drive away. The nearest mainline train station is Oxenholme where there are connections to London, Manchester and Glasgow. From Oxenholme a local train service runs to Burneside where a pre-booked taxi can be arranged to pick you up and take you to the cottage.
Once you’ve settled in, you can enjoy several great walks from the door which will take you across scenic countryside, through farmland and along riverside trails. The walk to the nearby beauty spot of Potter Tarn can be incorporated with a trip to a local brewery for a refreshing pint, or try the walk to Gurnal Dubs which involves some steep hills that will reward you with stunning views over the
Lake District.
You can also enjoy days out by bike. If you’ve brought your own with you, there is bike storage available on site, or bikes can be hired from a rental shop in the village nearby. Popular places for two wheels include Grizedale Forest and the Langdale Valley which both offer gorgeous scenery for leisurely bike rides, as well as several thrilling mountain bike routes.
