Family Things to do in the Cotswolds

Kids and adults alike will feel like giants at the Model Village in Bourton-on-the-Water.

A unique attraction, being the only Grade II-listed model village in England, it is a popular place to visit and a great way to get your bearings of Bourton as you walk amongst the scaled down winding lanes. It’s actually one ninth of the size of the real-life village, but is built from the same Cotswold stone.

The attention to detail is incredible and the model includes the River Windrush and its bridges, plus all the important buildings that existed in the village in the 1930s, including the church where you’ll even hear hymns being played. There’s also a miniature replica of the model village itself.

Broadway Tower is an iconic folly and landmark that stands high above the countryside around Broadway.

When you arrive, grab some refreshments at the cafe before exploring the 200-year history through the multimedia tour and museum exhibits. Then, climb up to the rooftop viewing platform, where on a clear day up to 16 counties can be seen.

Afterwards, head into the tower’s parkland which is home to a resident herd of red deer and offers plenty of space for kids to roam freely too. 

There is parking at Broadway Tower, but if you’re in the mood for a good walk, park in the village of Broadway and join the Cotswold Way for a circular walk of about 3.5 miles to the tower and back. It’s a hilly route and can be muddy, so is perhaps best suited to older children.

Want a real outdoor adventure? Saddle up at the Bourton Vale Equestrian Centre in Bourton-on-the-Water for a horse-riding tour that the whole family can enjoy.

There are various lessons and experiences for all levels of ability, but the River Ride is perfect for children, as well as nervous adults – ideal for dipping your toe into the equestrian world to see what it’s like. 

Opt for the River Ride and an experienced guide will walk with you and your horses to lead you into the shallows of the river at Lower Slaughter, where your horse will enjoy a paddle and a splash about. It’s great fun and there are opportunities for photos before you head back.

Animal-loving families will love the Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens near Burford. Allow a full day so that you can take your time as you enjoy your ‘walk on the wild side’!

Home to a wide range of birds, mammals, primates, reptiles and amphibians, residents include giraffes, rhinos, zebras, sloths, crocodiles and giant tortoises to name just a few.

A particular highlight is the Madagascan Walkthrough exhibit where you can walk in close proximity to cute little lemurs. 

Throughout the day, keepers host events such as the daily penguin talk that takes place at feeding time, while other attractions include a ride on Bella the train (April to October), the adventure playground and the children’s farmyard home to friendly goats that love to be stroked.

Anthology Cottages are situated in the heart of the Cotswolds, on a private estate and come equipped with an array of luxury children’s facilities.

Within the grounds you will find a delightful two-storey Wendy house and a play cabin. In the play cabin you will find dressing up clothes, brio railway, plenty of books to keep the bookworms happy, and array of toys and arts and craft supplies. For the sunnier days, you will also have access to pedal tractors and push cars, plus, child sized tennis racquets and croquet sets.

Regardless of the weather there is an indoor heated swimming pool, situated right next to the the children’s playground. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

For older children particularly, you will find a ping pong table and pool table in the games room, as well as a 75 inch TV with a PS4 and Xbox to keep them entertained.

Within the cottages you will find a host of books, boardgames and DVDs to keep you busy during your stay.
