Tree Pipit Cottage is a cosy, single-storey property that was once one of the estate’s outbuildings, but has been lovingly converted to provide comfortable accommodation. Throughout the cottage areas of the original stone walls remain exposed for an injection of period, country character, while the light colour palette gives it a bright and fresh feel.

An open-plan living area features a sitting room with two sofas and a dining table that can seat four people, offering an ideal place to enjoy family meals together or nights in front of the TV. An electric wood-burner will warm you up on those cooler evenings and make the cottage feel extra cosy. In the living area, you’ll see that a picture of a Brigand aircraft has been proudly hung on the wall. It’s a nod to the White family who bought the estate in 1919 and were instrumental in the manufacture of early, pioneering aircraft.

When it comes to whipping up a picnic for a day out or a tasty dinner, you’ll find everything to do so in the fully-fitted kitchen, which also has a dishwasher to make clearing up easy. French doors lead from the living area out onto a paved courtyard garden with a table and chairs where you can enjoy an alfresco lunch or pre-dinner drinks. Beyond this is a lawned area that guests of other cottages also have access to.

The first of the two bedrooms has one double bed, whilst the second has two singles (which can be converted into a double on request), which makes the cottage ideal for a small family. It’s so peaceful here, with hardly a sound outside, that many guests report having one of the best night’s sleep they’ve ever had. There’s also a family shower room with a shower, sink and WC.

Tree Pipit Cottage is one of five cottages set on the owners’ 8-acre estate and on arrival, the owners who live in the Georgian country house on the estate, will be available to meet you. Across the garden there is a laundry room with washing machine and tumble dryer facilities that is shared with guests of other cottages. Guests are welcome to enjoy walks in the estate’s grounds that include a garden with mature trees and a large pond, as well as a wooded area and fields. It’s a totally peaceful place and as such guests are asked to respect the air of tranquillity.

The estate in which Tree Pipit Cottage is located is a haven for wildlife including deer and a range of birds. The owners are keen to help nature flourish by, for example, maintaining the natural pond and ensuring there are bee-friendly plants.

The neighbourhood

There are some good country pubs within a relatively short distance, while the market town of Axminster is about 6 miles away. Here, you will find a good choice of shops and supermarkets where you can stock up on supplies, as well as a range of restaurants. If your cottage stay is with the children, or even if it’s not, Little Orchard Alpacas near Axminster offers a variety of alpaca walks and experiences that are sure to delight little and big kids alike.

Countryside hiking routes, cycling trails and bridleways abound in this area of East Devon, so there are plenty of ways to enjoy the fresh air. For days filled with sea views and family fun on the beach, head to one of the charming seaside towns such as Seaton, Lyme Regis or Sidmouth on the Jurassic Coast. Enjoying World Heritage Status, the Jurassic Coast is also an excellent place for fossil-hunting and taking long walks on the South West Coast Path, where dogs are very welcome too.

For those looking for more information on what is available please contact our Guest Services team who would be happy to provide you with recommendations and further details.

Getting around

Due to the rural location, travelling here and around the area by car is strongly advised. Please note that there are narrow lanes leading to the estate’s cottages, however there are a number of passing places should you encounter an oncoming vehicle. There is parking for one car at Tree Pipit Cottage. However, transport to and from nearby Axminster train station can be arranged should you wish to arrive and depart by rail. There is a regular mainline service between Axminster and London.
