  • About the property

Nutkin’s Cottage is a one-bedroom hideaway that’s a great choice for a romantic escape in the Lake District. It has a spacious feel and is brimming with country charm and contemporary, shabby-chic style. As part of a beautiful, five-star cottage complex (there are just four other boutique-style properties here) with three acres of tranquil gardens, it offers an idyllic setting for walks hand-in-hand, enjoying nature and cosying up together indoors. With an on-site spa and swimming pool available for your exclusive use, massage treatments on request and the option to book the service of a private chef who will cook up a fine-dining feast in the privacy of your cottage, Nutkin’s is a true romantic retreat.

  • The space

Nutkin’s Cottage is elegantly decorated with soothing and dreamy pastel tones, that set off the wooden flooring and wooden ceiling beams beautifully. The layout is set out over a single, ground-floor level and the open-plan living/dining/kitchen area is perfect for cosy days and nights in cooking together or watching a film. There’s a plump sofa and an armchair, a Smart TV with Freeview and Netflix built-in, and a log-burner to make those winter evenings even more special. The cottage also features music control pads and Bluetooth technology so that you can play songs from your own collection, or stream music.

The bespoke kitchen has enough worktop space and all the mod cons to prepare delicious meals, including a double oven, induction hob and fridge/freezer, plus pots and pans. You can eat at the breakfast bar, the dining table that seats two in comfort and is next to the window for lovely views over the fields, or step outside onto the covered patio to dine alfresco – you can even stoke up the BBQ if you want.

The bedroom at Nutkin’s is like staying in a boutique hotel with a super-king-size bed, a dressing table and a bath made for two where you can sip Champagne or watch TV whilst having a relaxing soak. There’s also an en-suite shower room. Whilst, Nutkin’s Cottage is very romantic, there is also space in the bedroom for a travel cot which also makes it a good choice if you have a baby to bring along.

For nature-lovers, there’s a ‘nature spotter diary’ for noting sightings of wildlife, drawing pictures, or adding photos or pressings. You’ll also find bird and nature guides to help you identify species. On a clear night, we recommend requesting some stargazing equipment to be dropped off at the cottage, wrapping up warm and seeing what magical things you can spot in the night sky.

  • Guest access

If you arrive before 7pm you will be met by a member of staff who will show you to your cottage and how everything works. For later arrivals, there is self-check-in, but a member of staff will welcome you the following morning. Parking is available on-site, near to the cottage.

  • Sustainability

The complex on which Nutkin's Cottage is situated is committed to minimising its environmental impact and caring for the surrounding countryside. It has a private water supply, while renewable biomass and solar power is generated on site. Recycling facilities include guest composting bins for food waste, while bark chippings are created in the grounds and used in the garden borders. There’s also a tree-planting programme, whilst nature is encouraged to thrive through measures like adding plants and wildflowers that attract pollinators including bees and butterflies. Meanwhile, eco-friendly cleaning products are used where possible and items included in welcome hampers are sourced locally.

If you'd like to offset the carbon emissions from your trip get in touch and we can arrange this for a small fee.

Local Info

The neighbourhood

Nutkin's Cottage is set in a quiet corner of the Lake District, on a small, luxury cottage complex with an on-site gym and a spa area with Jacuzzi, sauna and a heated 16-metre swimming pool. The pool and spa facilities are made available to one cottage at a time, so that you can experience having them all to yourself for the ultimate pampering treat (you will be asked to pre-book time slots). For an extra cost, spa treatments including aromatherapy and sports massages, as well as yoga sessions, can be booked.

There are also three acres of gardens and an arboretum for nature-lovers to explore. Birdwatchers in particular will enjoy looking for the many garden species, as well as trying to spot woodpeckers and owls. The pond attracts frogs, newts and ducks, while bats are frequently seen, and on occasion so are wild deer.

Within a 15-minute drive of the cottage are the popular towns of Kendal and Windermere, so supermarkets for stocking up aren’t far, but there is a local shop within 5 minutes’ drive for those urgent essentials. When you’d prefer to eat out, there are a variety of pubs and restaurants within driving distance. However, if you want to work up more of an appetite first, walk to the pretty village of Staveley, which takes just under an hour, for a choice of dining at the pub or the Hawkshead Brewery, or enjoying a cake or pie from the coffee shop or the artisan bakery.

You can also take advantage of the private dining service (extra cost) where a local chef will prepare a delicious, multi-course dinner in your cottage for you to enjoy without having to lift a finger.

Whilst there are plenty of walks to soak up the scenery directly from the cottage door, if you fancy a day out in the car there are many attractions in the region, including the Lakeland Motor Museum, the Lakes Aquarium and pleasure boat cruises on Lake Windermere.

Getting around

Due to the semi-remote, rural location, we recommend arriving at Nutkin's Cottage by car and the M6 is only a 15-minute drive away. The nearest mainline train station is Oxenholme where there are connections to London, Manchester and Glasgow. From Oxenholme a local train service runs to Burneside where a pre-booked taxi can be arranged to pick you up and take you to the cottage.

Once you’ve settled in, you can enjoy several great walks from the door which will take you across scenic countryside, through farmland and along riverside trails. The walk to the nearby beauty spot of Potter Tarn can be incorporated with a trip to a local brewery for a refreshing pint, or try the walk to Gurnal Dubs which involves some steep hills that will reward you with stunning views over the Lake District.

You can also enjoy days out by bike. If you’ve brought your own with you, there is bike storage available on site, or bikes can be hired from a rental shop in the village nearby. Popular places for two wheels include Grizedale Forest and the Langdale Valley which both offer gorgeous scenery for leisurely bike rides, as well as several thrilling mountain bike routes.
