Harcombe Cottage is single-storey and offers comfortable accommodation with a traditional cottage feel. Areas of the original stone walls have been left on show to allow the original character to speak for itself, while the light-coloured walls and rich red and orange furnishings offer a clean, but rustic flair. You’ll also notice pictures of aircraft around the home, which honour the estate’s heritage. In 1919 the White family bought the estate and went on to be pioneers in the manufacture of early aeroplanes.

An open-plan living area features a kitchen/sitting/dining room with two plump armchairs, a dining table for two and a TV, offering a compact and cosy space to relax, snuggle up and generally shut yourself away from the world and make yourself at home. The bedroom is a generous size and has a double bed and an en suite shower room, plus ample storage to house your belongings. From almost every room there are lovely views, mainly of the cottage’s private garden.

Equipped with a table and chairs, and an outdoor clock, as well as its own lawned area, the garden is a secluded spot to soak up the sun, enjoy breakfast in your pyjamas, or sip drinks beneath a summer sky.

Harcombe Cottage is one of five cottages set on the owners’ 8-acre estate and on arrival, the owners who live in the Georgian country house on the estate, will be available to meet you.
Guests are welcome to enjoy walks in the estate’s grounds that include a garden with mature trees and a large pond, as well as a wooded area and fields. It’s a totally peaceful place and as such guests are asked to respect the air of tranquillity.

The estate in which Harcombe Cottage is located is a haven for wildlife including deer and a range of birds. The owners are keen to help nature flourish by, for example, maintaining the natural pond and ensuring there are bee-friendly plants.

The neighbourhood

There are some good country pubs within a relatively short distance, while the market town of Axminster is about 6 miles away. Here, you will find a good choice of shops and supermarkets where you can stock up on supplies, as well as a range of restaurants that are perfect for dinner for two if you don’t feel like cooking. If you’re feeling romantic, a day out to Forde Abbey, a former monastery in Dorset, offers a beautiful setting with stunning gardens for hand-in-hand strolls.

Countryside hiking routes, cycling trails and bridleways abound in this area of East Devon, so there are plenty of ways to enjoy the fresh air. For days filled with sea views and fun on the beach, head to one of the charming seaside towns such as Seaton, Lyme Regis or Sidmouth on the Jurassic Coast. Enjoying World Heritage Status, the Jurassic Coast is also an excellent place for fossil-hunting and taking long walks on the South West Coast Path, where dogs are very welcome too.
